For centuries, humans have strived to identify patterns and cycles within nature, honing our skills over time. With our keen observations, we have uncovered a myriad of cycles, from seasonal changes to ocean tides and daily rhythms. However, some phenomena remain shrouded in mystery. The research I’m sharing with you today falls into this category, as an international group of researchers has unveiled a new pattern present in rainforests around the globe. Unfortunately, the reasons for its emergence and its implications are still unclear.

The Research Unfolds

A team of 356 scientists, led by researchers from University College London, conducted an extensive study on tree diversity in tropical rainforests, which are known to be the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. They discovered a surprising trend: only 2 percent of tree species in these forests account for 50 percent of the trees across the Amazon, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Their findings were published in the journal Nature on January 10, 2024.

To break it down, the researchers estimate that around 1,000 tree species are responsible for the approximately 800 billion trees found in tropical rainforests, while the remaining 46,000 species represent the other half. This analysis drew from over one million tree samples collected from 5,050 acres (2,048 hectares) across 1,568 locations worldwide. Interestingly, while African tropical forests show fewer overall tree species compared to those in Southeast Asia and the Amazon, they still reflect this same pattern. Professor Bonaventure Sonké from the University of Yaoundé I in Cameroon remarked to The Guardian:

“The fact that African forests do not have as many species as those in the Amazon and Southeast Asia is well known, but we also find that they share the same proportion of common species, indicating fundamental rules governing all tropical forests.”

With this intriguing pattern identified globally, researchers are left pondering whether a fundamental mechanism dictates the structure of tropical forests, which is the focus of their future investigations.

The Implications of the Findings

“Our findings hold significant implications for comprehending tropical forests. By understanding the most common tree species, we can likely forecast how entire forests will react to the rapid environmental changes we face today. This is particularly vital because tropical forests serve as crucial carbon sinks, storing vast amounts of carbon.”
