Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery
Imagine for a moment that you are free from all constraints. If there were no limitations or challenges in your life, who would you become?
By Mike Kitko
I often find myself complicating the simplest of tasks. It's amusing to reflect on how many times I've transformed straightforward ideas into convoluted processes, only to realize that I've hindered my progress.
Take 2016 as a pivotal moment in my life; everything I knew crumbled. I hit the reset button on my health, finances, and relationships, adopting uncomplicated principles that dramatically improved my existence.
The Possibility of Change at Any Moment
I was once a 300-pound man, teetering on the brink of despair, struggling with alcohol and unhealthy habits. After losing my second executive role in under two years and having strained family relationships, I made significant changes. Now, I thrive as a healthy business owner who loves and is loved beyond what I once deemed possible.
When I launched my coaching practice, I focused on sharing the insights that transformed my life—realizing that my thoughts and emotions shaped my painful reality. By altering these internal narratives, everything around me shifted.
As I shared these teachings, I witnessed remarkable transformations in others. New heights in health, wealth, and love became commonplace. The key lies in understanding that inner states dictate the quality of life, not external factors.
A person plagued by self-hatred will spiral into misery, while someone who embraces self-love will experience abundance and joy. It truly is that straightforward.
How can we deepen our self-love? By intentionally altering our thought patterns and emotional habits.
Consider this: if you had no barriers, what would your ideal life look like? How would you spend your time? What possessions would you have? What achievements would you celebrate? How would you interact with those around you?
Once you visualize this ideal existence, reflect on the thoughts and feelings of that version of yourself. Are they content? Do they recognize their worth? Are they confident and energized? Do they give or take? Do they sacrifice for others? Are they anxious about the future?
Make a list of their thoughts, feelings, and how they engage with the world.
Here’s the critical insight—your most challenging task is to embody that version of yourself. You must retrain your mind and emotions to reflect this new identity. That envisioned self is your authentic self, already known within you, though you may still identify with a lesser version.
In previous discussions, I’ve highlighted my top three growth techniques: meditation, shadow work, and visualization. Each serves as a method to retrain your mind and body to align with your true self.
The Instruments for Genuine and Enduring Change
Meditation allows you to observe your chaotic thoughts and feelings, teaching you that you are not defined by them but are their observer. This practice harmonizes the analytical mind with the emotional self, enabling trust, love, and joy to flourish.
Shadow work involves confronting and resolving deep-seated pains. Unaddressed traumas will perpetuate fear and doubt, keeping you trapped in negative patterns.
Visualization is about stepping into your higher self now, not waiting for a future transformation. By adopting the thoughts and feelings of that ideal self, you begin to reprogram your mind and body. Trust that you already know how your higher self thinks and feels; embodying that mindset will lead to significant changes in your life.
Putting It All Together
Recently, my wife and I watched a show where a character claimed to be perpetually happy. This belief stemmed from living unconsciously, reacting to thoughts and feelings without self-awareness.
We all have a choice in who we want to become. You can continue on autopilot, allowing your current mindset to dictate your journey, or you can consciously choose how you think and feel, shaping your identity and future.
The decision is yours.
