Chapter 1: My Apple TV Experience

Yes, I realize this is yet another blog post about Apple TV from me. However, I can't resist discussing it, especially after transitioning to using the Apple TV as my primary entertainment device in the living room.

Apple Should Preserve the Apple TV

Despite my previous skepticism, I embraced the Apple TV a few weeks ago, leading to an intriguing yet challenging experience. This shift has unveiled several fundamental flaws in the “all-in-one Apple TV” approach, particularly for users in the UK. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far, my aspirations for improvements, and the reason I'm seeking your input.

My Transition Away from Sky TV

Last month, I finally bid farewell to Sky TV. For those unfamiliar, Sky is a major broadcasting company owned by Comcast, which has been a staple in the UK for years. While it boasts remarkable technology and user-friendliness, it comes with a hefty price tag and lacks integration with Apple TV (more on this later). After my previous criticisms of Apple TV in 2021, I knew it was time to cut ties with Sky.

My Commitment to Apple TV in 2024

Now, our television receives a singular, beautiful 4K HDR signal from the Apple TV. I’ve also subscribed to Now TV (which, ironically, is owned by Sky) and ensured that every terrestrial service is easily accessible on the Apple TV Home Screen through their respective apps. Now TV provides access to many Sky channels, including entertainment, sports, and movies. However, it lacks traditional features like recording capabilities. The user experience is far inferior compared to Sky's impressive system; in fact, the Now TV app is riddled with bugs, poor design, and an ineffective TV planner. Additionally, the streaming quality leaves much to be desired, especially during dark scenes where pixelation is rampant.

How Apple TV 4K Revitalized My Viewing Experience

I was utterly mistaken about my initial perceptions of Apple TV. The aforementioned terrestrial apps—BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5—are well represented and offer a delightful user experience. However, there’s a significant hurdle that remains.

Sticking to Old Habits

I’ve grown accustomed to traditional TV watching. For those younger folks familiar with the term "Netflix and chill," I mean the routine of plopping down on the couch, grabbing the remote, and channel surfing. While this habit has diminished with the rise of streaming and catch-up TV, there are still moments when I simply want to relax and browse through channels.

The Challenges of My New Setup

This has proven to be quite difficult with my new arrangement. As previously mentioned, the Now TV app is cumbersome, providing access to only a limited selection of channels. If I wish to explore BBC channels or the various Channel 4 offerings, I must engage in 'app hopping.'

This process is far less enjoyable—and significantly more frustrating—than channel surfing. Apple TV attempts to streamline this by integrating numerous streaming apps and terrestrial services into the 'TV' section of its interface. It generally performs well, surfacing upcoming shows and making recommendations. A simple tap on a show leads you directly to the relevant app. However, this still isn't the traditional channel surfing experience that many of us prefer. It feels laborious and highlights a major shortcoming of Apple TV in the UK.

The UK TV Dilemma

In many regions, users can log into Apple TV using their TV provider’s credentials, granting access to that provider's content without needing to sign into each channel's app. This appears ideal and could potentially restore the channel-surfing experience I crave. However, there’s a notable absence: the UK is missing from the list of countries with compatible TV providers for Apple TV.

I was aware of this limitation before fully committing to Apple TV, but I didn’t anticipate how isolating it would feel. Apple TV users in the US, Switzerland, Qatar, and Ireland can enjoy a feature that feels like the missing link in my current setup.

The UK’s TV landscape, rife with the BBC’s public funding, Sky’s corporate dominance, and independent channels like ITV and Channel 5, is undoubtedly complicated. While I cannot blame Apple for this situation, I recognize the challenges they face in navigating the UK TV ecosystem.

All I desire is a return to my old TV viewing habits, even if it requires adapting to a new way of channel surfing. Presently, my experience is a mix of enjoyment and frustration.

Seeking Your Insights

If you reside in a country where your TV provider integrates seamlessly with Apple TV, I’d love to hear your experiences. Is it as fulfilling as you hoped? Additionally, if you possess insights into the UK TV industry and its impact on Apple TV users, please share your thoughts.
