Life-Altering Lessons from 3 Years of Solitude in a New Country

Chapter 1: Embracing Change
In 2021, I embarked on a journey across the globe to Canada, leaving behind my family, friends, and familiar surroundings. Surprisingly, loneliness was not my primary concern. Relocating to another continent presents numerous hurdles—some anticipated, others unexpectedly challenging. This experience serves as a reminder to all who dare to take risks and invest in themselves.
"Discipline is the only deciding factor in your success."
You have the freedom to pursue your dreams, which is the remarkable aspect of life. However, this freedom can become overwhelming if you struggle to determine your path. At 16, I aspired to be a singer. While I had talent, I lacked the patience, discipline, and bravery to consistently share my work.
After exploring countless stories of creators and writers, I noticed a common thread: they continued to invest in themselves despite feeling awkward in front of an audience. If you're relying on motivation to sustain your actions, know that it often wanes quickly.
Section 1.1: Celebrate Every Achievement
Creative individuals can be their own worst critics, often diminishing their own journeys. Successful YouTubers cherish their initial thousand subscribers as much as their millionth. Life is both fleeting and enduring. Whatever you produce—whether it feels awkward or inspiring—take pride in it. Ultimately, no one will advocate for your work as passionately as you do.
People appreciate your efforts. I once saw a video of a man distributing roses in Central Park, proudly announcing on a sign, “I just got a new job.” Every day, countless individuals start new jobs, but how many choose to celebrate by sharing joy with others?
Subsection 1.1.1: The Centipede Dilemma
Don’t fall into the trap of overthinking—be the architect of your own decisions. I love the fable of the centipede and the rabbit. The centipede, asked by the rabbit which leg is the fastest, becomes paralyzed by over-analysis.
Many of us resemble the centipede: our tendency to overthink can hinder us from crafting the lives we desire. When we believe every decision must be flawless, we become paralyzed. Remember, choices can often be revised, but inaction is irreversible.
Section 1.2: The Importance of Connections
Reach out—people are inherently social beings. Don’t passively wait for opportunities to find you. While I was busy researching and trying to apply what I learned, it was reaching out for help that truly opened doors for me. My greatest obstacle was my own ego; I was the one holding myself back.
If you don’t ask for assistance, the answer will invariably be “No.”
Chapter 2: Understanding Expectations
No one is obligated to assist you. If you do seek help and find none, consider this: why should anyone invest their time in you? You can always offer something in return or promise future reciprocation, but never assume help will come freely.
Your responsibility is to persistently put yourself out there. Don’t take rejection personally; it’s simply a part of the process.
