Chapter 1: My Introduction to Panic Attacks
Have you ever considered panic attacks from a different angle?
My First Experience
Years ago, a devastating earthquake struck my neighborhood, leaving behind destruction and chaos. I was at home when it hit, and in a state of panic, I rushed outside into the street. The tremors were terrifying; several buildings collapsed nearby, and the streets felt like they were rolling like waves. After the quake, I sought refuge with my family for several weeks.
As a psychology student, I needed to return to university, which was quite a distance from my family’s home. Aftershocks continued for a long time, and I found myself avoiding going home during the day. I often spent hours sitting in a nearby park, gripped by fear and anxiety. My mental state, already fragile, deteriorated further during this period.
One night, I experienced intense cold sweats and palpitations, prompting me to call friends for help. They accompanied me to the hospital, where tests revealed nothing physically wrong. This scenario repeated itself multiple times until a cardiologist recommended I consult a psychiatrist. It was then that I was diagnosed with panic attacks and agoraphobia.
How I Overcame the Struggle
Initially, the disorder loomed over me. I adhered to my medication and, with the support of my therapist and my own efforts, began to find relief. Although panic attacks still occur occasionally, I no longer allow them to dominate my life. My spiritual practices have played a significant role in my recovery, and I am currently focusing on techniques like Gradual Relaxation. Each day, I feel happier and more at peace.
To Those Experiencing Panic Attacks
As someone who has been through panic attacks and works as a psychologist, I want to share some insights with others who may be struggling. At first, panic attacks can feel overwhelming, and it may seem like doctors cannot find anything wrong. Your body, however, is signaling distress.
Panic attacks are among the most treatable anxiety disorders. Many individuals find relief within just a few sessions of therapy and medication. The key to overcoming this challenge lies in exposure therapy and cognitive-behavioral techniques. It requires commitment, awareness, and courage on your part.
Thank You, Panic Attack
Although it may sound unusual, I genuinely feel gratitude towards my panic attacks. This experience has shaped me into the person I am today. Initially, it was exhausting; even sitting calmly felt elusive. I loathed living under the constant dread of impending doom. Through self-reflection, I recognized how valuable peace and happiness truly are.
The fear of death illuminated the beauty of life as a precious gift. I resolved to conquer this illness, and I succeeded. I began to relish the moments of tranquility and joy that I once took for granted.
After Experiencing Renewal
Though the panic attacks subsided, I still felt residual anxiety. I remember the first day I was free from those fears; it felt like a rebirth. That day was a personal celebration. After months of avoiding even a simple drink due to fear, I bravely decided to treat myself to a few beers. I enjoyed music and felt a sense of normalcy.
I persisted until the attacks vanished completely. I confronted my fears head-on and made strides toward my dreams. Life is beautiful, and I embraced this reality. Sharing my thoughts and experiences with you is part of this journey.
I no longer concern myself with others' opinions. Instead, I focus on spending quality time with loved ones and pursuing my passions. I have cultivated a deeper spiritual connection through meditation, breathing exercises, and reading. I take peaceful walks, minimizing negative emotions and stress in my life.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize that if it weren't for my struggles, I might have lived without truly appreciating the beauty around me. Now, I believe I lead a more fulfilling life, and I am confident that as long as I maintain this outlook, panic attacks will not return.
I THANK MY PANIC ATTACK FOR CHANGING ME SO MUCH AND I RELEASE IT.
