The Evolution of Technology: Triumphs and Terrors for the Over-70s

Chapter 1: The Changing Landscape of Technology
In today's world, technology plays a crucial role in connecting us, especially for those over 70. The daily experiences of this generation are vastly different from those of our grandparents. We are continuously introduced to innovations that enhance our lives—though they can also be frustrating. This ongoing wave of advancements has kept us in a constant state of learning and adaptation.
Reflecting on our early years, life moved at a more leisurely pace, relying on telephones and radios for communication, far from the digital world we know now. We witnessed the emergence of televisions, word processors, computers, email, the internet, smartphones, Zoom, and even electric vehicles. While video games and robotics were peripheral, they still marked a significant shift. Some technologies have come and gone—like dictating machines, slide projectors, and CDs—but we’ve navigated their rise and fall.
As I observe my peers, I notice a wide range of comfort and proficiency with computers among those aged 70 and above. Many acquired their skills in the workplace, while others have opted out of using email or smartphones entirely. Yet, a significant number of older adults are becoming increasingly tech-savvy, with about 75% of individuals over 65 accessing the internet. A Pew Research survey from 2021 revealed that 96% of those aged 18 to 29 own smartphones, compared to 61% of those 65 and older—a gap that has narrowed from 53 points in 2012.
Technology surrounds us daily. For instance, just last Wednesday, I began my morning by catching up on the news through television. Then, I read two newsletters on my smartphone. After breakfast, I checked my desktop to respond to emails and worked on writing software for my latest book. Following that, I attended a hybrid meeting—both in-person and via Zoom—at my retirement community. Post-lunch included a classic nap before another Zoom meeting. I then drove my technologically advanced car to run errands and used my landline to arrange a meetup with a friend. Finally, after dining with friends, I relaxed by watching our current TV series, Designated Survivor, and ended my day reading a few pages of a book on my Kindle. This is what being 88 looks like in 2023—so distinct from the experiences of previous generations.
Chapter 2: Celebrating Our Pioneering Spirit
Kudos to all of us over the age of 70! We have embraced technologies that were non-existent during our formative years. This pioneering attitude deserves recognition. Most of us have boarded the technology train, discovering its immense potential for enrichment and connection—offering a world of knowledge just a click away.
You may be thinking, “It’s not that simple, Katharine,” and you’re absolutely correct. Navigating today’s technology can be daunting, and many of us have faced significant challenges in keeping up with rapid changes. We all know individuals who have fallen victim to scams, losing money in the process.
Just yesterday, I encountered a technical hiccup when my Zoom link for my Writers Group failed to work. Panic set in, and I found myself frustrated and questioning my abilities. I chastised myself, wondering why I couldn’t manage something a child could do. However, a group member sent me a functioning link, and with their help, I was able to regain my composure and continue with my day.
Many of us harbor fears about future technological advancements. Recently, there has been much buzz regarding a new artificial intelligence tool called ChatGPT. This interactive platform can answer questions and generate original essays and poems. While I was initially intimidated by its potential, fearing it might stifle creativity for writers and educators alike, I realized that change is inevitable and often beneficial.
This video titled "Introduction to Technology Triumphs" showcases how older generations are adapting to new technologies, offering insights and real-life examples of triumphs and challenges.
As we consider the implications of artificial intelligence, it’s essential to stay positive. Innovations continue to emerge that help us navigate these changes, reminding us that we can adapt.
Tips for Navigating Technology in a Rapidly Changing World
- Seek Assistance: Many individuals over 70 must become comfortable asking for help. Reach out to friends or family when needed. This can foster connections and reduce feelings of isolation. If you can afford it, consider hiring professional help. Additionally, explore local libraries and senior centers for free or low-cost tech support.
- Be Kind to Yourself: It’s crucial not to blame yourself for technological difficulties. Learning new skills can be challenging for everyone, and it may take longer for us as we age. Research indicates that patience and determination can lead to successful learning experiences.
- Practice Regularly: To maintain our skills, continual practice is essential. After retiring from my psychotherapy career, I had to relearn how to send a Zoom invitation due to lack of use.
