Imagine turning your child's whimsical doodles into high-quality illustrations. Thanks to generative AI, this is not only feasible but also affordable and simple. Recently, OpenAI introduced two remarkable features in ChatGPT: ChatGPT Vision, which can analyze images, and DALL-E3, which generates new images based on descriptions.

In my experience, I’ve utilized these tools for various tasks, from interpreting charts in government documents to extracting details from restaurant menus. However, I also found a fun way to engage with my children using these innovations.

My three-year-old son recently created a charming little drawing with a marker, which is a common pastime for kids his age.

His creativity often exceeds his motor skills, and when I inquired about his artwork, he described it as "a small triangular car with a smiley face and a rainbow." Intrigued, I decided to see if ChatGPT could bring his imaginative concept to life.

I uploaded a photo of his drawing and prompted ChatGPT Vision with the following request:

"Here is a child’s drawing of a car. Describe it in enough detail so an illustrator can create a detailed illustration."

Here’s what ChatGPT provided:

The drawing features a somewhat abstract car representation. The body resembles a triangle or cone, with the broader end at the bottom. It has a smiley face on the front, and a wavy line protrudes from the top, resembling an antenna or a fun design feature. The wheels are depicted as squiggly shapes, rather than perfect circles, giving them a playful, textured look. The background is predominantly white with minimal black scribbles and a subtle green curve at the bottom, exuding a delightful childlike charm that would benefit from an illustrator’s creativity.

Next, I turned to DALL-E and provided the prompt:

"Create illustrations based on this description," along with the text from ChatGPT Vision.

The output was impressive:

While the result was exciting, it seemed to adhere too closely to the original black-and-white style. Fortunately, DALL-E3 allows for interactive adjustments. I requested, "Make it colorful and more three-dimensional."

When I shared this with my son, his joy was palpable! It captured his vision perfectly, transforming the simple lines into a dynamic creation. Here’s a comparison of his original drawing and DALL-E3's final output.

The illustration brilliantly encapsulates my son's idea, turning the simple line atop his drawing into vibrant streamers flowing behind the car. Beyond delighting a child, ChatGPT's new capabilities to analyze and generate images open up countless possibilities.

While the current process isn't fully integrated—requiring an intermediate step of converting the drawing to text and then back to an illustration—the results are still remarkable. ChatGPT demonstrates an impressive ability to understand and expand upon the original concept, creating a visualization that aligns perfectly with the child’s drawing.

The potential applications for generative AI are vast. You could utilize this technique to:

• Create illustrations for children's books
• Transform rough sketches of characters or products into detailed 3D models
• Generate landscape images of imaginary places based on sketches and descriptions

The possibilities are endless, and we are just starting to explore the capabilities of AI in creative fields. My preschooler wholeheartedly agrees!
