Thoreau, the esteemed 18th-century writer, offers a unique viewpoint on the primal essence of mobility that he observed during his nature walks. He was fascinated by the graceful, elastic motions of snakes and salamanders, effortlessly navigating through their environment. While I may not observe much movement during my own walks, I often see blue jays and robins foraging for food. Thoreau was equally enchanted by how birds flitted effortlessly from branch to branch, a contrast to the more complex limbs of humans.

Achieving physical flexibility is attainable through various activities such as walking, yoga, gymnastics, and other forms of exercise. If you’ve ever led or participated in a team, you may have noticed that not everyone is willing to compromise during decision-making. Often, one individual may stubbornly cling to their viewpoint, hindering the team’s progress. A team lacking adaptability is destined for failure.

An inflexible mindset clings to a single course of action, even when it’s time to pivot. In Charlie Chaplin’s film "Modern Times," his character mechanically continues tightening objects on a production line, unable to stop when it’s time to do so, leading others to view him as irrational.

Moreover, an unwillingness to adapt can alienate you from your peers. In contrast, those who can adjust their mindset find problem-solving becomes easier. Their brains become adept at disentangling from challenging situations and generating new solutions. Adaptability fosters success.

Engage in actions that counter your habitual choices, preventing your mindset from becoming too entrenched. With practice, your mind will reach a state of balance, fostering fluidity and flexibility. Approach life with intention rather than being swept away by a single thought or idea. Even if you struggle, committing to being open-minded can significantly enhance your quality of life.

I once had a friend who stayed with me for a few days but adamantly refused to eat tomatoes. We made sure to exclude them from our meals. However, during a gathering with an international group, we forgot to omit them, and she made it clear that she wouldn’t eat that day’s meal. Consequently, she became isolated, as her rigidity made her unapproachable. An inflexible mindset can weigh you down, while a fluid one allows you to manage challenges effortlessly.

For my friend, flexibility meant training her palate to accept various flavors. For others, it might involve embracing new ideas or liberating oneself from a fixed mindset. A bird that clings to one branch will struggle to find food; it must navigate the skies and explore multiple trees for sustenance and shelter.

The essence of survival, success, and even fitness lies in resilience. In yoga, this resilience emerges through balance, which is fundamentally rooted in flexibility. In mental terms, it means releasing before becoming trapped in rigid thoughts, being open to fresh experiences, learning from difficulties, and having the courage to change direction when necessary.
