Living Simply: A Path to Better Decision-Making

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Challenge of Choice

As we transition into adulthood, it's common to recognize that life presents us with a variety of challenging decisions. These choices extend beyond significant life events, such as job applications or relationships, to everyday dilemmas like what to have for dinner, whether to skip a yoga class, or if we should respond to a text message immediately or postpone it indefinitely.

The Complexity of Choice

In discussions about simplicity, we cannot overlook the complexities surrounding our choices. Research suggests that having too many options can lead to a decrease in satisfaction with our decisions. For instance, choosing a meal from a restaurant with a vast menu may leave us feeling less confident than selecting from a more concise list.

Many believe this stems from an innate fear of making the wrong choice, which has deep evolutionary roots. In earlier times, poor decisions could threaten our survival, and while we live in a more secure environment today, the anxiety surrounding choices persists. We all desire a life filled with joy and minimal regret.

Even when options are limited, the pressure to decide can feel overwhelming. For some, indecisiveness may be linked to underlying depression, while others might struggle with self-esteem issues. Ultimately, for many, the difficulty in making decisions is closely tied to the intricacies of modern life.

Chapter 2: The Importance of Living in the Present

We have moved away from genuinely experiencing the present moment. Advances in medicine and quality of life enable us to plan for the future—a luxury our ancestors lacked. However, this shift often leads us to construct barriers in an attempt to shield ourselves from uncertainties.

A poignant Japanese saying, 未来とは今である, translates to "the future is now." This encapsulates the essence of a simple life: embracing the moment.

Visualization of our relationship with time

The image often reflects how we perceive time as something fleeting that we must chase, making it increasingly difficult to appreciate the present.

Chapter 3: Embracing Simplicity

To adopt a simpler lifestyle, we must learn the art of being present. This does not mean neglecting our needs or aspirations; rather, it aligns with mindfulness, aiming to alleviate unnecessary burdens, particularly in decision-making.

But what does a simple life entail? It revolves around making mindful choices and intentionally minimizing life's complexities. When faced with decisions, opting for simplicity often leads to the most suitable choice.

For example, should you cook at home or dine out? If your refrigerator is stocked with fresh produce, preparing a meal at home helps reduce waste and save money. Conversely, if a friend invites you out, prioritizing social connections over food waste can be the wiser choice.

When considering a significant purchase, if it’s something you’ve contemplated for a while and it enhances your life, it may be worth buying. However, if you tend to make impulsive purchases, it’s often better to postpone your decision to avoid regret later.

When deciding whether to invite someone out for a drink or wait for their message, the choice is usually clear—unless you enjoy the uncertainty. Similarly, if you're tempted to skip a pre-paid dance class, attending could be beneficial for your self-esteem and overall well-being, unless you’re genuinely unwell.

While these examples suggest that simplicity hinges on discipline—such as saving food, adhering to commitments, and reaching out to others—it's more about making choices that feel right without guilt.

To determine if a choice is suitable, consider how it will impact your emotions. Ideally, your decisions should be free from remorse.

There are no strict rules for embracing a simple life, but a fundamental principle is the willingness to make thoughtful choices. Sometimes, this requires a bit more discipline. In the beginning, the effort to make mindful decisions may feel burdensome, but over time, it becomes the key to simplifying your life.
