Innovative Ways to Showcase Photography: My Journey with Wood Prints

Written on

Chapter 1: The Artistic Photographer's Perspective

In the world of photography, there are numerous styles and approaches. I identify as an artistic photographer, focusing on emotion, ambiance, and style rather than just technical precision. This mindset shapes how I approach my work, akin to preparing to paint.

Section 1.1: A New Approach to Displaying Photography

Years ago, I ventured into selling my prints but found the standard options—such as frames, canvas prints, and greeting cards—uninspiring. While I appreciated the craftsmanship of others, I yearned for a distinctive and captivating presentation style.

At a craft fair, a friend introduced me to a vendor offering prints mounted on wood. While the concept intrigued me, the execution was lacking; the wood was flimsy, and the prints seemed poorly adhered, risking future peeling.

Fortunately, my partner worked for a company that produced butcher’s blocks and cutting boards. They generously provided me with beech and hard pine blocks in custom sizes, a fortunate start for my project.

Subsection 1.1.1: Techniques for Mounting Prints

I requested a variety of shapes, including squares, landscapes, and portraits, with the largest block being A3 at a substantial 3/4 inch thickness. My initial challenge was ensuring that the photo paper adhered smoothly to the wood without bubbling or peeling. After testing a quality spray mount, I found success with my technique.

Next, I focused on sourcing high-quality photo paper that provided UV protection. Durability became my obsession; I wanted my prints to withstand conditions in bathrooms or kitchens. I discovered a suitable water-resistant varnish that worked well with both photo paper and wood.

Cutting the paper accurately for the blocks required precision, which I achieved using a Stanley knife. With practice, I quickly created a collection of wood-mounted prints.

Section 1.2: Gaining Interest and Success

I began showcasing my wood prints at craft fairs and small exhibitions. The unique quality captivated attendees, often leading them to mistake my photographs for paintings. This distinctive approach set me apart from other photographers.

One photographer remarked that my method was merely a passing trend destined for clearance sales. However, I proved him wrong by selling my prints in shops, galleries, and even online. My creations gained popularity, and I was frequently asked about my process, which I kept under wraps until now.

As I pondered new designs, I considered circular blocks. A framer I consulted dismissed the idea, suggesting it would evoke memories of old-fashioned plates. Despite his advice, I proceeded with circular designs, which turned out to be my best-sellers.

Over the years, I enjoyed success with my wood-mounted prints until the pandemic hit in 2020. Shortly before lockdown, I moved to an apartment lacking space for production. By then, I was ready for a change, leading me to explore print-on-demand services.

Reflecting on my journey, I learned that innovation often comes from assessing the market and finding ways to improve existing ideas. Taking risks is essential; while feedback is valuable, trusting your instincts can lead to success. Be adaptable and prepared to pivot as circumstances evolve, ensuring you have options for the future.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Have you ever transformed a traditional concept with your own flair? What are your experiences in selling photographic prints? Stay tuned for more articles about my photography adventures.
