Seeds play a crucial role in ensuring food security, especially as the global population approaches 8 billion. With the rising demand for food, the challenge of providing sufficient sustenance becomes more pressing. Alarmingly, approximately one-third of food produced for consumption is wasted, which exacerbates food insecurity.

To address this issue, enhancing agricultural yields is essential. Traditionally, fertilizers and pesticides have been employed to boost production; however, these chemical solutions contribute to environmental pollution and economic losses. As climate change exacerbates pest and pathogen challenges, the reliance on such chemicals is increasingly unsustainable.

Given these concerns, there is a pressing need to explore eco-friendly alternatives to enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing waste. Seed priming is another viable method that involves subjecting seeds to mild stress before planting, thereby increasing their resilience against more severe physical and biological challenges during germination.

One promising technique for seed priming is the use of cold plasma. Plasma, a unique state of matter alongside solid, liquid, and gas, is essentially an electrically charged gas made up of various charged and uncharged particles.

Cold plasma can be generated at relatively low temperatures, below 60 °C (140 °F), making it suitable for treating seeds without causing damage. This technology can be harnessed in two main steps:

Step 1: Generating Plasma

The initial phase in cold plasma seed priming involves plasma generation. This is achieved by increasing the number of electrons in a gas and subsequently accelerating them. Various methods, such as heating the gas or applying electromagnetic fields, can facilitate this process. The rapid movement of gas atoms leads to collisions that cause electrons to be released, resulting in positively charged atoms.

Step 2: Applying Plasma

The second phase involves applying the generated plasma to treat the seeds. This treatment effectively eliminates harmful microorganisms and alters the seeds' coatings. Treatment can be performed directly, where plasma particles are directed at the seeds, or indirectly, where the seeds are surrounded by plasma.

The atmospheric pressure plasma technology utilizes direct treatment, employing a device that introduces gas at the top, applies high voltage, and directs the plasma to the seeds. In contrast, dielectric-barrier discharge and glow discharge methods involve indirect treatment, where seeds are enveloped by plasma generated within a controlled environment.

In summary, cold plasma technology presents an innovative and environmentally friendly approach to seed priming. By preparing seeds in this manner, they can better withstand various stresses during germination, leading to increased crop yields.
