A Fresh Start: Letting Go of Pandemic-Induced Habits

Written on

Chapter 1: Reflection on Pandemic Habits

During the pandemic, many individuals found themselves acquiring new skills and habits. It's amusing to realize that my life prior to the pandemic mirrored many of the isolation protocols that became standard. You might assume I was unaffected by the shift, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Despite my long-standing preference for solitude, the pandemic brought me into a shared isolation with my family.

Previously, my solitude was confined to a small rental space where I could go weeks without stepping outside. The only interruption would be my landlord, who often knocked on my door, worried about my well-being. His frequent question, “tum baahar kyon nahin jaate,” was his way of expressing concern about my solitary lifestyle. Our conversations were limited by language barriers, often conducted in a blend of Hindi, which allowed me to explain my project deadlines with brief, simplified sentences.

He wasn't just a landlord; he acted as a father figure, occasionally bringing me meals or sending help to tidy my living space, knowing I preferred to manage it alone. My isolation had become a comfortable routine, masking my fears about the outside world and my uncertain future. During those solitary days, I filled the void of inadequacy by immersing myself in learning new skills.

Each month, I would earn just enough to cover my rent and basic necessities. I had learned to stretch my resources, sustaining myself on minimal food and just enough sugar to keep going. It wasn't that I was indifferent to money; rather, I was more focused on filling the emotional emptiness I felt.

I often devoted hours to projects that absorbed my attention, managing to cover my essentials early in the month. The remaining days were spent in what seemed like endless pursuits of knowledge. Had I extended my stay in that rental, the pandemic would have found me there. But I moved on to a more challenging environment, where my family’s presence disrupted my previous routines.

The concentration I once had faded as I adapted to working around my family's needs. Activities that required intense focus became impossible. In response, I shifted to less demanding tasks, often engaging in mesh modeling to maintain the appearance of productivity in line with my engineering background, despite my disinterest in the subject matter.

Fast forward to 2022, I found myself overwhelmed by the clutter I had accumulated—physically and mentally. I felt trapped by the weight of it all, more anxious and moody than ever. Despite my efforts to minimize distractions, the past two years had filled my life with unnecessary baggage, casting doubt on my true passions.

I believe that true well-being thrives on simplicity and the small things that truly matter, which invigorate us. Upon returning home after nearly six years, I was told I looked healthier than ever, unaware that I had been pushing myself to endure prolonged periods without food. While it wasn't a healthy choice, it felt manageable without the weight of excess in my life.

Now that I have monetized the skills I acquired during that time, I would not resort to such extremes again. The term "pandemic talents" can encompass not only the skills we learned but also the irrelevant distractions we allowed into our lives. These distractions consume our mental energy, leading to increased anxiety and negativity.

It's time to purge these distractions if they exist in your life—I'm beginning that process for myself.
