Embracing My Inner Petty: A Journey of Self-Reflection

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Pettiness
Pettiness—what a distasteful trait it is. I find it frustrating that I can sometimes display such immaturity. Despite my efforts to grow and better myself, this particular flaw is proving to be quite persistent.
As I engage with social networks, I notice how they can amplify this undesirable behavior. One major reason is the countless individuals who follow others merely to secure a follow back, only to subsequently unfollow them.
These users inflate their follower count to create an illusion of importance, discarding those they’ve left behind as if they were insignificant. It’s quite rude, to say the least.
While I understand that sometimes a follower may feel the need to unfollow due to a mismatch in content, it feels insincere when they’ve already engaged enough to follow in the first place.
I’ve noticed this behavior increasingly, particularly on platforms like Instagram or Twitter. But on Medium? Aren’t we here to share insights and collaborate in a constructive space? It seems that sneaky behavior transcends platforms.
As I navigate my own social media interactions, while I would never stoop to the level of following just to unfollow, I do find myself curating my follower list meticulously. There are, of course, notable figures—authors, scientists, celebrities—whom I don’t expect to follow me back. When they do, it’s a delightful surprise.
But for those who seek validation through follower numbers? No thanks. That approach suggests a one-sided dialogue: “I want you to listen, but I’m not interested in your voice.” If I want a lecture, I’ll seek it out on my own, thank you very much.
So there you have it—my petty rant for today. If you follow me only to unfollow shortly thereafter, rest assured I’ll eventually notice and will stop following you back. But really, it’s no skin off my nose; I’ll keep doing my thing regardless.
