Exclusive Features of iPadOS 16
Since its release, iPadOS 16 has brought numerous innovations to Apple's tablet lineup. Released alongside macOS Ventura as part of the "second batch," this operating system faced delays compared to iOS 16 and watchOS 9, allowing Apple to refine its features.
In this article, we will explore five standout capabilities in iPadOS 16 that are limited to certain iPad models.
Connecting External Monitors
One of the most noteworthy features introduced with iPadOS 16 is the ability to connect external monitors. This functionality pairs seamlessly with Stage Manager, enabling users to connect monitors that support resolutions of up to 6K. The integration of Stage Manager makes the experience even more immersive, allowing for a desktop-like environment.
With this capability, the iPad can effectively function as a computer, appealing to users who prefer not to invest in a Mac. However, it’s important to note that this feature is restricted to iPads equipped with M-series chips.
People and Door Detection
The Magnifier app has been a staple in iPadOS for some time, but it often goes unnoticed in app lists. This tool allows users to zoom in using the device's camera, offering functionality beyond the standard Camera app.
In iPadOS 16, the Magnifier has gained a new detection mode that can identify people and doors. However, this feature is exclusive to the iPad Pro models from 2020 onward, specifically those with A12Z Bionic and M-series processors.
Virtual Memory Integration
Another significant enhancement in iPadOS 16 is the introduction of virtual memory. This feature activates automatically when the iPad’s traditional RAM is insufficient, allowing a portion of storage to serve as virtual memory—referred to as SWAP.
Specifically, users can utilize up to 16 GB of storage for this purpose. However, access to virtual memory requires specific models: the iPad Air 4 M1 with 256GB of storage, the iPad Pro M1, or the iPad Pro M2.
Reference Mode for Consistent Colors
Apple has also introduced Reference Mode in iPadOS 16, designed to ensure color consistency across devices during creative projects. This feature eliminates the frustration of color discrepancies when viewing content on different devices.
However, Reference Mode is highly exclusive, available only on iPads featuring Liquid Retina XDR displays, specifically the 12.9-inch iPad Pro M1 and M2 models when paired with a Mac through Sidecar.
Stage Manager: A Game Changer
Stage Manager arguably stands out as the most significant feature of iPadOS 16, revolutionizing multitasking capabilities on the iPad. The experience is reminiscent of working on a PC or Mac, allowing users to manipulate multiple windows simultaneously.
While initially intended for M-series iPads, Apple later expanded Stage Manager's availability to include the 5th generation iPad Air and later, as well as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro from the 3rd generation onward, and the 11-inch iPad Pro from the 1st generation onward.
