Turning Freelancing Dreams into $100K Realities: Lessons Learned

Written on

Chapter 1: Reaching the Six-Figure Mark

It's amusing how we often fixate on significant milestones, isn't it? The $100,000 mark is a notable achievement in the freelancing world for a reason: it signifies that you've navigated early challenges, such as finding clients, setting appropriate rates, managing finances, and positioning yourself as an expert in your field.

I recently hit this milestone after 2.75 years of freelancing full-time. Interestingly, about 30% of that income came in just the last four months. Reflecting on my journey, there are valuable insights I wish I could share with my past self, which could have accelerated my progress towards this goal.

Lesson 1: The Instability of Freelancing Will Normalize

Freelancing can be unpredictable, as I've experienced firsthand. For example, in October 2020, I earned $7,150—my highest monthly income at the time—but it followed months of just $4,004 and $1,730. This inconsistency is part of the freelancing experience; clients can come and go, and project demands can vary.

To illustrate, my average monthly income fluctuated significantly over time, not breaking the $5,000 mark until February. Today, I’m averaging in the mid-$7,000s, but it took considerable time to reach this point. The challenge lies in securing gigs that meet three criteria: they must be high-paying, plentiful, and recurring. Although this can be daunting, it’s achievable with the right connections.

Lesson 2: Recognize Your True Value

Writing is a prized skill, akin to assembling a puzzle where every piece matters. Clients seek your expertise because they lack the time or capability to produce the same quality of work. This realization can transform your approach to client interactions.

You don’t need to compromise on your worth or accept unreasonable deadlines. Instead, frame your services as solutions to their problems, allowing you to command fair compensation.

Lesson 3: Don’t Hesitate to Increase Your Rates

When I began freelancing, I immersed myself in resources about establishing a writing business. I was determined not to undervalue my work, but I lacked a clear strategy for raising my rates.

Through discussions with a friend who runs a consulting business, I learned about the importance of charging what you’re worth. After confidently proposing my new rate to a client, I realized the power of believing in my value.

Lesson 4: Acknowledge Your Time Constraints

Time is finite, and so is your potential income. While you can increase your rates, doing so may limit your client base. To enhance your earnings, consider outsourcing tasks and developing additional income streams.

Though I’ve invested time in side projects, I only recently began delegating tasks to other freelancers. This allows me to focus on managing client relationships while they handle the writing and editing.

Lesson 5: Make Wise Investments of Your Time

Just as you would with financial investments, be strategic about how you allocate your time. The projects you prioritize now will shape your future. Currently, I dedicate only half my time to client work and spend the rest on personal projects, which I believe will yield long-term benefits.

Lesson 6: Leverage LinkedIn's Potential

I wish I had utilized LinkedIn sooner. I’ve developed a strategy that consistently brings in leads and lucrative opportunities, yet many freelancers overlook this platform. By refining your profile and actively engaging, you can significantly enhance your chances of connecting with high-paying clients.

Chapter 2: Key Takeaways for Aspiring Freelancers

To summarize, here are the vital lessons I wish I had known when I started freelancing:

  1. Freelancing is unpredictable, but stability does emerge over time.
  2. Recognize that you provide valuable solutions; value your work accordingly.
  3. Regularly reassess and increase your rates.
  4. Explore outsourcing to scale your business effectively.
  5. Consider the long-term impacts of your time investments.
  6. Actively engage on LinkedIn to secure promising opportunities.

If there’s one final piece of advice for fellow freelancers, it’s this: progress may not always be visible in the moment, but every small achievement contributes to your overall journey. Whether it’s completing a project, sharing insights, or engaging with your audience, every effort counts. Stay focused on your goals, and you’ll find that you are indeed moving in the right direction.
