Transform Your New Year: Embrace Guiding Words for 2024

Written on

Chapter 1: A New Approach to New Year's Resolutions

In a recent reflection, I shared how a particular Facebook post had a profound impact on my life. A year ago, I found myself in a very challenging phase—autumn 2022 marked a low point, and by November, each day felt like a struggle to get through.

It was during this difficult time that I came across a Facebook post featuring a word search. The message claimed that the first four words you noticed would serve as your mantra for 2023. Each time I encountered the post, I consistently saw the same four words: Connection, Power, Self-care, and Money. It became evident that these were the elements I truly needed in my life, which likely explains why they stood out to me repeatedly.

I took these words, noted them on a sticky note, and placed it on my monitor so I could see them every day. I began to gather quotes that resonated with these words, writing them down in my notebook each morning.

Throughout the year, I contemplated these quotes, sometimes even responding to others with the wisdom I had collected. Allowing these guiding words and the associated quotes to steer me through the year has been transformative. The shift in my mindset that occurred over these months significantly altered my perspective on life.

Section 1.1: The Guiding Words of 2023

As the year comes to a close, I feel compelled to share the guiding words that facilitated my transformation, along with a favorite quote for each.

Connection

“One life on this earth is all we get, whether it is enough or not enough, and the obvious conclusion would seem to be at the very least we are fools if we do not live it as fully and bravely and beautifully as we can.” — Frederick Buechner

Power

“He is most powerful who has power over himself.” — Seneca

Self-Care

“Take rest. A field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.” — Ovid

Money

“There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no independence quite so important, as living within your means.” — Calvin Coolidge

These quotes and this practice have been instrumental in lifting me from my darkest times. I sincerely hope that this approach can be just as beneficial for others.

Section 1.2: Why Traditional Resolutions Often Fail

Many of us have attempted New Year’s resolutions in the past, but it’s clear that they often fall short of our expectations. Personally, I have never experienced a New Year’s resolution that significantly changed my life. However, the guiding words I embraced have made a remarkable difference.

Maybe you’re currently facing tough times. Perhaps the idea of setting a resolution feels unrealistic or overly restrictive. Or maybe you’ve struggled to keep resolutions in the past and are ready to explore a different path.

I encourage you to identify a few guiding words to reflect on in 2024. Choose them intuitively; overthinking can hinder the process. In the coming days, I will share my own guiding words for the upcoming year, selected through a similar method as last year. I’m eagerly anticipating the impact they will have on my life.

If you decide to adopt guiding words, I would love to hear what you choose and how you plan to incorporate them into your life. Wishing you a 2024 filled with peace, health, and prosperity!
