As someone who often dreams vividly, I relish the few extra moments in a semi-conscious state to savor my dreams. I create my own cinematic experiences, complete with plots and characters. Most mornings, I wake up beaming, largely due to the pleasant dreams I've had. Opening my eyes to find my dog snuggled next to me is a sign of a restful night, allowing me to embrace the new day with energy.

However, there are instances when I awaken with a heavy heart, burdened by a less than ideal dream. On such days, I long for a fresh start. Today was one of those mornings.

Upon waking, my dog was positioned beside me, this time sprawled out on his back, eliciting a smile from me. I leaned over to give him a belly rub, showering him with affection and gratitude for his comforting presence.

A smile triggers the release of neurotransmitters that uplift our mood, relax our bodies, and reduce heart rates. I'm also caring for another dog this week, who was sprawled out, eagerly seeking a belly rub as well. This delightful scene of love and connection made me chuckle.

The specifics of my dream are lost on me and now seem irrelevant. What I do understand is that it served as a gentle reminder from my subconscious, preparing me for a series of events set to unfold this weekend. I've taken note, Mind, and I'm on it!

Three Daily Rituals for a Fulfilling Morning

I thrive on routines, as they provide structure and predictability. Here are three essential practices I follow each morning to cultivate a blessed day:

1. Cultivating Gratitude

I glance at my calendar and choose one task to focus on for the day. This helps me stay on track amidst distractions. For instance, yesterday, I dedicated time to writing a letter of recommendation for a student. Today, my priority is a manuscript due soon, despite the numerous other tasks on my plate.

Looking Ahead

In the past, I would start my day with a run or a game of tennis. However, my current priority is being available for my kids, so I have shifted my exercise routine to later in the day. I aspire to incorporate meditation into my mornings, which requires me to carve out time for myself before the kids rise. My goal is to begin with just a few minutes and gradually extend this to 20–30 minutes.
