# Three Unique Smartphone Features I Hope to See Soon
Written on
Innovative Smartphone Evolution
Smartphones have evolved into indispensable tools, encompassing a wide range of functionalities that once required separate devices. From making dedicated MP3 players nearly obsolete to revolutionizing language learning through apps, smartphones have taken over various sectors. Additionally, they now come equipped with advanced cameras, further solidifying their dominance. With this context in mind, here are three unique smartphone features I wish would become a reality in the near future.
Bicycle Safety Enhancements
As cycling continues to gain popularity, especially with the rise of eBikes, there’s a growing need for improved bicycle safety. Software like Strava and Google Maps has already adapted to this trend, and it's time for smartphone manufacturers to join in. Imagine if smartphones could replace traditional bicycle safety accessories such as headlights, taillights, and even bells to alert pedestrians.
Envision using your smartphone not only for GPS navigation and fitness tracking but also as a lighting system for your bike. A lightbar on the top could project brightness ahead, while blinking red lights could be integrated at the bottom. Additionally, an easily accessible feature on the lock screen could allow users to emit a sound to signal their presence. The concept of a comprehensive bicycle accessory integrated into smartphones is entirely feasible, even if battery life poses a challenge.
Smartphone as a Computer Mouse
Despite significant technological advancements, including landing humans on the moon, we still don’t utilize our powerful smartphones as computer mice. Although there are open-source solutions available, they lack user-friendliness. Imagine the convenience of transforming your smartphone into a functional mouse whenever needed.
Most smartphones already contain the necessary components like sensors for distance measurement, charging capabilities, and touchscreens for input. While this idea may seem niche, it could significantly enhance the value of smartphones if implemented correctly.
Solar Charging Integration
Despite skepticism surrounding solar technology, integrating solar cells into smartphones could significantly improve battery life. As someone who values longevity in device usage, this idea seems practical in today’s world. Even a small solar cell could provide a trickle charge from ambient light, including indoor illumination, while promoting sustainability.
Realistically, even a modest 5% increase in battery life would extend smartphone usage without the hassle of frequent charging. As smartphones become more energy-efficient each year, a future where these pocket-sized devices are primarily powered by solar energy seems achievable.
Final Thoughts
While some of these innovative features could potentially be implemented in the coming years, I remain skeptical about their actualization. Although these concepts appear straightforward, integrating them into established software systems like Android 13 and iOS 16 presents considerable challenges. Additionally, the intense competition among tech giants for silicon supremacy complicates matters.
Nevertheless, I hope to be proven wrong and that these features materialize sooner than anticipated. What unique features would you like to see integrated into smartphones? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
