Overcoming the Fear of Success: Insights for Aspiring Writers

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
As a first grader, I embarked on my reading adventure, delving into my initial chapter book solo. Sitting on my bunk bed, tears fell onto the final page of "Charlotte's Web," and I was captivated by the enchanting power of words. Those words that evoked sorrow for a lost spider inspired me to harness that same power. In that moment, I realized my aspiration to become a writer was born.
For many years, I composed stories and poems, sharing them only with a select group of friends. During high school, I enrolled in creative writing classes, yet I remained hesitant to present my work beyond my inner circle. The fear of success — or more precisely, the anxiety surrounding how others might perceive my success — loomed over me. What judgments would arise if people discovered my writing talent? Would they consider me conceited? Or worse, would they deem me eccentric?
Eventually, I came to understand that the fear of success often translates to a fear of rejection or unpopularity. In a world where comparisons are rampant, it’s easy to feel inadequate. However, the reality is that success is a personal concept. What truly matters is pursuing your passion and excelling in it. Your happiness with your work is what counts most.
What Defines Success for You as a Writer
Success is subjective and varies from person to person.
My initial book (now out of print) was released under a pseudonym. The thought of revealing my true identity terrified me. When I saw my book listed on Amazon, an unsettling knot formed in my stomach. I envisioned a scenario where it became a bestseller and subsequently a film, and I obsessed over how my words would be scrutinized by the world. Sleep eluded me for days.
In that moment, I recognized that I was grappling with a fear of success. It seemed illogical since achieving success as a writer had always been my dream. Nevertheless, that fear was palpable, and I needed to navigate through it.
Here are several practical steps to help you face the fear of success:
- Acknowledge your fear
- Set realistic goals
- Share your work with others
- Celebrate every achievement
- Seek out a supportive community
- Remember that success is personal
Let’s explore these strategies in more detail.
Acknowledge Your Fear
The first step to overcoming fear is acknowledging its presence. If success terrifies you, it’s crucial to understand the root of that fear. Are you apprehensive about change or the uncertainty that comes with it? Identifying your fears is the first step toward addressing and conquering them.
Set Realistic Goals
To alleviate the fear of success, consider setting achievable goals. Instead of aiming to write the next great American novel immediately, focus on a more manageable target, such as writing 300 words daily. Once you achieve that, you can set new milestones. Breaking your objectives into smaller, attainable tasks can significantly reduce your fear of success.
Celebrate Every Achievement
Recognizing and celebrating your accomplishments, no matter how minor, is vital. When you reach a goal, take time to acknowledge it and feel proud. These celebrations will help reframe your perception of success. Each success paves the way for further achievements, enabling you to learn and grow.
Find a Supportive Community
Surrounding yourself with a nurturing community can be instrumental in overcoming your fear of success. Engaging with individuals who share similar aspirations can provide motivation and inspiration. Additionally, having support during challenging times makes a significant difference. For me, platforms like Medium and Twitter have fostered a sense of community. Connecting with fellow writers enables you to identify growth areas and refine your journey toward success.
Remember that Success is Personal
Finally, it’s essential to recognize that success is a subjective concept. What may work for one writer might not resonate with you, and that’s completely acceptable. The most important factor is discovering what aligns with your values and remaining authentic to yourself. When you do so, success will naturally follow. Only you can define what success signifies for you. Some may see it as achieving a New York Times bestseller, while others find it in a heartfelt response from a reader. Both perspectives are valid.
I continue to navigate my own definition of success, but I refuse to hide any longer. My words have reached the world, totaling hundreds of thousands, and for now, that is my version of success.
If you identify as a writer, there’s no reason to fear success. Employ these strategies to help you move past your fears and start appreciating your achievements. With time and perseverance, you can quiet your inner critic and relish the success you’ve earned.
