Chapter 1: The Password Overload

How did I let this password chaos spiral out of control?

I possess a password for my computer, another for my phone, and additional ones for my email accounts. Every app, website, social media platform, and banking service requires its own unique password.

In short, I am overwhelmed by passwords.

This realization hit me when I attempted to update my profile on an online shopping platform. I discovered that the password for this site differed from the one required to process my payments, which also wasn't the same as the one needed for profile changes.

Like many others, my interests span over a hundred different apps and websites. The digital realm is vast, and the choices are endless. However, attempting to navigate this wealth of information with just a few passwords is a daunting task.

I began my journey with a simple approach. I selected a straightforward phrase that represented my identity in the digital landscape and aimed to use it universally. To differentiate my passwords, I added symbols like “#” and “%.” Initially, this strategy worked well.

But soon enough, I was faced with an avalanche of requirements: at least one capital letter, a number, certain symbols, restrictions on consecutive letters or numbers, a minimum of eight digits, and a unique password for each site.

Thus, I crafted variations of my original password to meet everyone’s criteria— or so I believed.

In doing so, I lost my way.

In a moment of desperation, I resorted to the unthinkable: I began jotting down my passwords in a physical notebook, crossing out old entries and rewriting new ones in a futile attempt to keep track. The thought of losing this precious notebook to a thief fills me with dread.

While I'm not overly worried about someone hijacking my accounts—given my own struggles to access them—I aim to be a responsible digital citizen. I understand the importance of cybersecurity and recognize that reusing similar passwords invites significant risk.

My goal is to establish multiple layers of protection, but sometimes I wish this effort didn’t consume so much of my time.

I can't help but feel nostalgic for the simplicity of writing in a notebook with a pen. No interruptions, no cyber delays, just the satisfaction of putting my thoughts on paper.

Sigh... I find myself as a bit of an old soul in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

As long as I can remember how to incorporate special characters into my unique combination of letters and numbers, I think I’ll manage just fine.
