Navigating Career Uncertainty at 24: A Personal Reflection

Written on

Chapter 1: The Reality of Feeling Stuck

At 24, I find myself grappling with a sense of stagnation. Is it acceptable for someone my age to express this? Older generations might dismiss it as a lack of ambition, but my experience tells a different story.

Currently, I’m lounging in my dining room, recovering from a nasty head cold and some painful cramps, still in my pajamas at 3 PM, and indulging in delicious Portuguese cuisine on a typical Thursday.

A recent chat with my roommate revealed that layoffs are occurring at her workplace, and I shared that my own company is in a similar predicament. We both lamented the state of corporate culture today, where employees often feel undervalued and underpaid, especially when talented individuals are suddenly let go.

Companies like Microsoft have laid off 10,000 employees, Amazon 18,000, and Google another 12,000, with media firms following suit. One long-time Google employee expressed his discontent, saying that receiving a layoff notice via email felt like “a slap in the face.”

Imagine being in a two-decade-long relationship and ending it with a text message—that's how it feels.

At my age, I've come to understand that any company can terminate your position at any moment, regardless of your performance or commitment. If you no longer align with their financial goals, you're at risk.

Despite this, I’m not one to remain idle, unless I’m unwell. Even now, I’m choosing to write this lengthy post instead of binging on Netflix.

After graduating, I ventured into creating a media company with friends, which unfortunately fizzled out due to our differing visions. I’ve launched a tech blog and even invested in an $1,800 domain (which is still available for purchase at themegabyte.com). I’ve gone viral on TikTok and am actively trying to build my presence there, started my own YouTube channel (which you can subscribe to), and even hosted a podcast called Chat with Carly. I’ve freelanced, worked with clients to enhance their TikTok channels, and had stints at NBCUniversal and NowThis—only to leave and return again.

The exhaustion is palpable.

Before graduating, I was already immersed in a full-time role at NBC. The pandemic delayed my graduation ceremony, so I was working without the chance to celebrate my achievements. I spent my nights covering significant events like elections, pandemic developments, and mass shootings.

I didn’t allow myself a breather, fearing that I would fall behind.

But this mindset became a double-edged sword. I thrive on busyness and the fulfillment it brings, especially when I’m sharing impactful stories. However, I’ve recently felt a lack of satisfaction in my work.

With each opportunity I’ve pursued, I’ve gained insights about myself. I’ve realized that enhancing my skills makes me more valuable and marketable. I’ve discovered a passion for connecting with people and sharing their narratives. Socializing enriches my understanding of the world, and I know that a life spent solely in front of a computer is not for me. Being a full-time editor doesn’t fulfill me.

I've come to appreciate my diverse interests and recognize that I shouldn’t confine myself to a single media niche. As a journalist, I deserve the chance to explore stories that ignite my passion and bring me joy.

To anyone reading this, my journey is ongoing, and I’m committed to reaching my ultimate goal: becoming a content creator who shares the stories of others. I see the potential within myself and am excited to continue evolving and discovering my path. I look forward to meeting new people in my field and embracing fresh opportunities.

You never know where your journey might lead. Even if I feel stuck now, I have the power to steer my life in any direction. It’s essential to believe in yourself and take risks for your fulfillment. I hope you do the same, no matter where you are in your journey.

Wishing you all the best in your endeavors!

Ciao.
