Chapter 1: Introduction to Interview Warmup
Preparing for a job interview, especially in the tech industry, can be a full-time commitment. Nowadays, getting ready for an interview can take months and may cost as much as $7,000 (yes, we see you, Interview Kickstart). Despite the time, effort, and money invested, there's no assurance that you’ll be fully prepared for the big day.
As someone who often feels anxious during interviews, I can relate. No matter how diligently I prepare, after lengthy discussions and coding sessions, my mind tends to go blank.
While some say that interviewing frequently at various companies helps ease the nerves, I simply cannot afford to spend that much time on a job hunt. Unfortunately, my financial responsibilities can’t wait for me to land a new position. That’s why I’m thrilled about Google’s new career resource — it enables you to practice interview skills without the exhausting process of applying to numerous jobs.
This tool is beneficial for more than just developers. Currently, The Interview Warmup provides practice questions for roles in data analysis, design, management, and more.
Chapter 2: How Does Interview Warmup Work?
To begin, select your desired field, and you'll receive a tailored set of questions to answer. The program records your responses and helps you analyze your performance. You can listen to your answers after completing the interview or choose to record a different response.
In my experience, I tried a mock interview for a UX/UI Design position. The questions I encountered included:
- Why do you believe you would excel in this role?
- Can you describe a time when you disagreed with a colleague? What was your approach, and what was the outcome?
- What key principles guide your decisions in cross-platform design?
- Share a goal you set for yourself and how you achieved it.
- How do you determine whether to utilize low-fidelity or high-fidelity designs?
As you can see, I was presented with one general question, two situational questions, and two technical inquiries. While my initial responses weren't stellar, Google's feedback was constructive and encouraging. Ultimately, it motivated me to keep practicing.
In summary, this tool offers a practical way to rehearse those tricky behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time you made a significant impact!") as well as technical queries relevant to your expertise.
