Insights on Pro Bono Work for Self-Employed Adventure Photographers

Chapter 1: The Value of Pro Bono Work
Last year, I ventured to Holland to volunteer as a photographer for the SUP 11-City Non-stop event, dedicating 11 days to this rewarding experience.
On September 7, 2023, I opted to work for "free," foregoing a potential €10,000 for two weeks. You might wonder why I would choose this path a second time. The truth is, the experiences gained from volunteering far outweighed any monetary compensation.
For self-employed adventure photographers, here are two key insights on how pro bono work can enhance your skills and expand your professional network:
Insight #1: The Connections You Make Are Priceless
The international flags in my small town remind me of the diverse athletes I encountered during the SUP 11-City Tour 2023. My first experience at this event was in 2022, where I documented the highlights of the five-day race. This year, I expanded my coverage to include both the non-stop and five-day races, challenging athletes to paddle an impressive 220 km (around 137 miles) across Friesland, Holland, following the historic Elfstedentocht ice skating route.
Taking part in this event again felt risky, yet my intuition urged me to go back. The opportunity to expand my professional network, collaborate with an outstanding media team, learn new skills, and deepen friendships I had formed the previous year was too valuable to pass up. The authentic connections I made during the SUP 11-City Tour are worth far more than €10,000.
In my newsletter, Adventure Photography Chronicles, I will be sharing a two-part series detailing my photography journey and the personal lessons I gleaned during those 11 days.
This video titled "The Ugly Truth About Being A Self-Employed Photographer" delves into the reality of freelance photography, exploring the challenges and rewards that come with the territory.
Insight #2: Prioritizing Over Publishing
As autumn arrives, I typically engage more in adventure sports photography. If you had asked me in 2022 whether I would feel anxious about stepping back from publishing articles during the busy season, I would have said the stress would be overwhelming. However, I decided to change my perspective in the latter half of 2023 and still witnessed steady audience growth despite my hiatus.
Having published thousands of articles and earning recognition as a Top Writer in Photography and Education on Medium by June, it was time for me to step outside my home office and focus on custom travel clients. This strategic shift from writing to prioritizing client relationships not only enhanced my portfolio but also improved my mental well-being.
The results? Greater value, potential collaborations, and a reinforced belief in finding the right balance. Remember, it's okay if you're still navigating your own rhythm—it took me over 20 years in entrepreneurship to arrive at this understanding, and I continue to learn along the way.
Pro Tip: Take proactive steps without fixating on unfulfilled outcomes. What truly matters are the actions you take today and every day towards your fulfillment.
