Healing from Crohn’s Disease: My Journey to Wellness
Written on
A Personal Account of Transformation
For 15 long years, I battled what was deemed an incurable autoimmune condition, Crohn's disease, until I discovered a path to healing. You might doubt the possibility of recovering to such an extent that the memories of suffering fade away, but I assure you, it is indeed possible, and it feels extraordinary. You deserve this transformation, but it requires your commitment to the journey.
A Decade of Relief
It has been 13 years since I last experienced issues related to Crohn's. I have previously shared my struggles with burnout, which escalated my condition, and addressed the nature of autoimmune diseases. Today, I want to highlight the mental aspect of recovery.
Living with Crohn’s Disease
Throughout much of my early life, I endured relentless abdominal pain, akin to being stabbed repeatedly. I was always near restrooms, and I’ve spent time in every public facility in my country, feeling utterly miserable and frustrated.
Eating or drinking even the mildest items would trigger violent reactions—shivers, diarrhea, and excruciating discomfort. My diet was limited to warm water, black tea, dark chocolate, bananas, rice cakes, and minimal meat.
Social outings often found me either in the restroom or anxiously hoping to return home in time. While friends enjoyed themselves, I concealed my agony, striving to maintain some semblance of joy in life. The impact on intimate relationships was just as challenging.
The Reality of Living with Crohn's
Adapting to a chronic illness becomes a necessity. I stocked up on medication, adhered to my strict diet, and limited my experiences to manageable ones. I surrounded myself with understanding individuals who recognized my struggles without needing to ask too many questions.
Years passed where I couldn't even fasten my pants due to the discomfort. Travel and sports were abandoned; they were simply unmanageable.
A Catalyst for Change
Ironically, my catastrophic burnout was a turning point that dismantled everything I had built. It compelled me to explore the intricacies of Crohn's disease and, more importantly, the mind's role in our health.
My Healing Journey Begins
Before embarking on this healing journey, I must emphasize the importance of consulting healthcare professionals. While they may offer temporary relief, I found that traditional medicine rarely cured Crohn’s or any autoimmune disorder.
You are the architect of your healing.
When I commenced my mental healing journey, I was physically and emotionally drained, devoid of hope. I was living with my parents, lacking a job, money, or a home, and even simple tasks left me breathless.
What I had in abundance was time, which I dedicated to reading extensively about the mind, the Law of Attraction, ancient healing practices, and alternative therapies. I consumed countless books, feeling as though I had rediscovered something vital.
Committing to Mental Exploration
Initially, I was skeptical. I needed substantial evidence to convince myself of these new ideas. The gap between my rational mind and acceptance of these concepts felt insurmountable, but I was determined. I noticed patterns, felt a glimmer of hope, and realized I had nothing to lose.
Engaging in Conventional Practices
I explored meditation, journaling, visualization, vision boards, and affirmations. The most powerful affirmation that resonated with me was:
"I can eat and drink whatever I want and always feel great!"
Given my restrictive diet for over fifteen years, this statement felt like a farce. Yet today, it is a reality.
Testing the Waters
I began to reintroduce forbidden foods: coffee, soda, fries, and bread—all of which previously caused distress. To my astonishment, I experienced no adverse effects. Could this be a miracle?
Unearthing the Roots of My Illness
Through introspection, meditation, and extensive research, I pinpointed the onset of my issues. The medical community’s stance of “we don’t know” was exasperating. I realized my subconscious desire to avoid certain social obligations had manifested as illness.
I recognized this behavior as a desperate act of rebellion against my upbringing, a cry for help that allowed Crohn’s disease to take hold.
Forgiveness and Acceptance
Understanding this led me to forgive both myself and my parents. We all act based on our best knowledge at any given moment. Holding onto resentment only burdens us further.
I found relief in acknowledging my past, freeing myself from the weight of victimhood. Accepting my condition allowed me to shift my focus, ultimately leading to my healing.
Cultivating Gratitude
I frequently reminded myself that my struggles could have been much worse. Many individuals endure far greater challenges. I learned to appreciate that my primary issue was not insurmountable.
Maintaining a Strict Diet
Adhering to a bland diet was challenging, but my family supported me in making it more enjoyable. This strict regimen was crucial, as it minimized discomfort and allowed my body to heal.
The Importance of Inner Work
If you are grappling with Crohn’s disease or a similar autoimmune disorder, I urge you to focus on your inner work. That is where the true solutions lie.
- Identify your triggers. Reflect on when your issues began to emerge and seek the root cause.
- Reframe your narrative. Rewrite your life’s story to depict yourself as a healthy, resilient individual.
- Forgive. Let go of grudges against yourself and others. Emotional burdens manifest physically.
- Practice self-love. Accept your body as it is; healing cannot occur in an environment of self-hatred.
- Embrace your situation. Shift your perspective and no longer dwell on your illness. The less energy you expend on it, the less power it holds.
- Take responsibility. Recognize your role in your condition and harness your power to heal.
- Visualize wellness. Envision your future health and reinforce it with affirmations.
The Journey to Healing Takes Time
Healing is not instantaneous, but it is achievable. I am living proof of this reality. Your journey may differ, but always begin within your mind. Stay optimistic—if I could overcome, so can you!
Good luck on your path. You’ve got this!
