Freedom and Independence: A Poetic Reflection
Written on
Chapter 1: The Dream of Freedom
Last night, I envisioned freedom—a dream where I roamed freely, enveloped in my own space, accountable only to myself.
In this dream, I found a serene environment, one that allowed me to flourish like a rose amidst a vibrant garden.
I dreamed of restful peace, free from the anxiety of waking up in a disheveled bed.
I imagined a day where I could break free from the constraints that tether me to others' expectations.
This dream of freedom felt like a spell, one that I hope will manifest into reality, allowing me to soar.
I envisioned walking into a place I could truly call home, where I could finally relax and say, "I have dreamed of freedom."
I hope you found meaning in my poem. It was inspired by the unfortunate reality that many individuals on the autism spectrum may never know the joy of true freedom and independence.
While there are numerous programs and workshops aimed at assisting those on the spectrum, it often seems that the individuals who need help the most are overlooked, their cases gathering dust instead of receiving attention.
On the other hand, there are high-functioning autistic individuals, like myself, who strive to contribute positively to society. However, we often face a paradox that keeps us trapped in poverty.
It's important to note that this situation does not apply to those from affluent families who possess the means to navigate these challenges.
When a high-functioning autistic person makes strides toward financial independence, they risk losing essential benefits. Just like anyone else, we have bills to pay and food to buy.
I urge psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists to consider our aspirations. We, too, yearn for freedom and independence, just like anyone who feels suffocated in what should be their sanctuary.
Thank you for taking the time to read my poem and the sentiments that follow. If this resonates with you, please share your thoughts in the comments. Your feedback and support mean a lot.
