Five Practices I Regret Not Beginning a Year Ago
Written on
Chapter 1: The Value of Reflection
Life often presents us with moments of reflection, leading to the realization of opportunities missed. There have been countless occasions where I've caught myself thinking, "If only I had begun this earlier!" Despite this awareness, I still find it challenging to commit to new habits promptly. After much deliberation, I often end up regretting the time lost when I could have been progressing. However, as the adage suggests, it's never too late to start.
Here are five practices I wish I had initiated a year ago:
Running
Running is essentially a form of free meditation combined with physical fitness. Recently, I've rekindled my interest in running, and although it presents its challenges, I can already notice improvements after just a few sessions. The goal now is to maintain consistency, ensuring that a year from now, I won't be regretting my slow start.
Keeping a Journal
As previously mentioned, journaling feels like a personal therapy session. It offers a valuable outlet for expressing thoughts and processing emotions. Additionally, journaling serves as a useful reference for the future, allowing for the discovery of behavioral patterns or unresolved issues upon revisiting past entries.
Writing on Medium
This point is fairly self-evident. I registered on Medium over a year ago and occasionally explored various articles but hesitated to publish my own. After finally taking the plunge and submitting my first piece a few months back, I've come to realize that Medium is a platform that welcomes diverse voices and writing styles. If you're contemplating sharing your thoughts on Medium, my advice is to dive in!
Intermittent Fasting
Note: This approach may not suit everyone, and it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting. Although I've toyed with intermittent fasting before, I had never committed to a structured routine until now. I recently adopted a circadian rhythm fasting method, which involves a twelve-hour overnight fast starting after dinner. I aim to extend this fast until lunchtime, depending on how I feel. Since most of the fasting time occurs while I sleep, it proves to be easier than all-day fasts, especially during work hours. Although challenging, I'm already experiencing increased alertness and energy levels.
Waking Up at 5 AM
This practice may not be suitable for all individuals. I don't have children or work shift hours, and waking up at 5 AM doesn't interfere with my sleep schedule as I can retire to bed earlier. I've found that this routine significantly enhances my time management, enabling me to fit more into my day. It also allows me to finish my work early, giving me some leisure time in the afternoon!
