Loose Change: Finding Inspiration in the Little Things

Chapter 1: A Small Spark of Inspiration
Just thirty-three cents—that’s what it took to momentarily revive my passion for writing. Can you believe it?
Throughout my life, I’ve dabbled in writing, but as my pace has slowed in recent years, I’ve found myself diving deeper into this craft. I've even begun to ponder how I might earn a little from it.
A few months ago, I joined Medium and was captivated by the wealth of stories, essays, and articles on the platform. There are so many gifted writers sharing their thoughts—both fiction and non-fiction—and I felt inspired to contribute my own voice to the mix.
When it comes to writing, I have a complicated relationship. On days when inspiration flows freely, it feels as delightful as savoring a Key West sunset or celebrating the end of the workweek. Writing becomes a joyous, liberating experience.
Conversely, when inspiration is elusive, it’s a struggle. The words just don’t come, and it feels like I’ve never crafted a coherent thought in my life. I grapple with the frustration of trying to articulate my ideas, as if I were wrestling with a complex calculus problem. It’s a disheartening experience that can drive you to the brink of despair—like wanting to stab your eyes out with a number two pencil or hurl your laptop through the nearest window.
Last week was one of those days; I had a sharpened pencil in one hand and my laptop in the other.
George Orwell famously described writing a book as an arduous and painful endeavor, driven by a force that is both inexplicable and irresistible.
But then, just when you least expect it, inspiration can strike. An unexpected idea might pop into your mind, or you could overhear a phrase while waiting in line at the grocery store. These moments can rekindle your passion for writing, which often feels like a solitary and frustrating journey.
Yes, it turns out that a few coins can motivate me to put down that sharpened pencil and set my laptop back on the table, filled with renewed hope to write once more.
What I've come to realize is that sometimes, the very thing that propels you forward can be as simple as discovering loose change in the couch cushions. It may not seem like much, but it is enough. Sometimes, that little bit is all you truly need.
