Exploring the Illusion of Identity: A Journey to Authenticity

What defines your identity?
Mother, French, Black, Male, Accountant, Christian, Elderly. These are just a few of the many identities we carry.
People often connect with those who share similar identities while feeling antagonistic toward those who differ. Humanity exhibits a curious tendency to categorize itself. However, I believe that fundamentally, we are all family, united as brothers and sisters.
Identity is merely an illusion.
I hold the view that identity is a construct—an idea that exists solely in our minds.
All identities are fabrications of thought.
Humanity has experienced a cognitive shift that allows us to categorize ourselves and others, giving rise to what we call identity, which ultimately resides in our imagination.
It seems absurd to evaluate individuals based on concepts that exist only in our minds. All humans belong to the same species, sharing this planet together. I prefer to embrace a grand vision of humanity, feeling enveloped in a profound love that mirrors the vastness of the universe.
Names are unnecessary.
Among all creatures on Earth, humans alone possess names. Names can restrict our existence. Carrying a common name associated with a specific culture may subconsciously tie you to its stereotypes. Such limitations hinder true freedom.
> Identity can often act as a cage in life.
Individuals can become confined within the prisons of their own identities, which can stifle their potential.
Humans have the capacity to excel in diverse fields. A chef can compose music; an artist can learn programming. The quality may vary, but that’s acceptable. There’s no obligation to monetize everything. In a capitalist world, many focus solely on profit, but I choose to challenge this notion.
> Pursue what you genuinely want to do, even if it brings no financial gain and diverges from your established identity. Embrace the carefree spirit of childhood.
Sometimes, my identity limits what I express and pursue.
> Who I am is a reflection of my past choices.
That’s why I refuse to be shackled by past identities and assertively express my current desires. This represents strength and bravery.
> At that moment, individuals break free from their previous selves and experience rebirth.
Identity comprises seven fundamental elements.
Core Aspects of Identity
- Age
- Gender
- Race
- Nationality
- Religion
- Occupation
- Family Role
Through these various facets, humans embody a multitude of identities. Yet, all these fundamental categories are mere constructs of our imagination.
> We are all fundamentally the same. All humans are simply Homo sapiens.
Take pride in your nationality, sexuality, gender, and profession.
> I don’t fully align with this perspective. Deep down, I question these distinctions.
I take pride in being human.
From the moment I entered this world, I felt a sense of pride in my humanity. I believe every human should feel this way. Just existing as oneself is a source of pride.
> This pride is inherent and unconditional.
Moreover, I feel that
> I take pride in being alive.
There’s no substantial separation between humans, animals, and plants.
> Humans are part of the magnificent tapestry of life on Earth.
When observing Earth from space, it becomes clear that humans, animals, plants, and nature are all interconnected. Everything in the universe interacts in intricate ways.
To an extraterrestrial being, humans, flowers, sharks, and lions might all appear indistinguishable.
Let’s delve deeper into each aspect of human identity.
Age
People often say, “Your twenties are the best years of your life.”
Such statements frustrate me. They reflect a narrow and passive mindset.
> A person who actively shapes their own life would never make such claims.
Time is a human construct; it doesn’t truly exist. The past and future are merely mental constructs. The present moment is all that truly exists—unless one finds themselves in a black hole, as depicted in Interstellar.
> Age is irrelevant, as all humans, regardless of their years, inhabit the present moment.
Gender
In the language of the Pirahã tribe, there are no distinct terms for men and women.
This illustrates that gender is a human invention. We are fundamentally the same, with slight physical variations.
There’s biological sex, which serves a reproductive function, and cultural gender, shaped by societal norms dictating attractions.
> However, this is all an illusion.
> Men, women, LGBTQ+ individuals—these are all human-created concepts.
Thus, men can wear traditionally feminine clothing, and women can wear masculine attire. A man can be a nurturing figure, just as a woman can assume a provider role.
> If it resonates with you, it’s neither strange nor unnatural.
Gender is a mere concept; we are all Homo sapiens.
Race
Humans display varied appearances, leading to classifications based on visual traits—Caucasian, Black, Latino, Native American, and so forth.
Distinct skin tones, facial structures, and hair types contribute to the beauty of diversity.
> Humans originating from East Africa migrated and adapted to various environments, altering their appearances.
Yet, these differences are superficial.
> Underneath, all humans share the same red blood and beating hearts.
To aliens, all races may appear identical. Thus, we need not fret about these differences.
> Race is ultimately a non-existent construct.
Nationality
Countries like Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Japan, and Finland are imaginary borders created in the human mind.
Certain individuals symbolize these nations—Barack Obama, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela—but they remain fundamentally human. The impressions we associate with nations often stem from government actions, which are also constructs of human imagination.
> Governments and individuals are entirely separate entities.
This distinction is natural.
I would feel elated if my home country’s team triumphed in a soccer tournament. However, during conflicts, soldiers often lose sight of their shared humanity, viewing each other as enemies.
In Attack on Titan, when characters first encounter humans beyond their walls, one expresses confusion about the concept of nationhood.
> A country is merely an idea.
There are no foreigners; all are simply individuals sharing this space.
> You can incorporate elements from any culture into your life, regardless of your origin. If a culture doesn’t resonate with you, feel free to discard it. Forge your own path, drawing inspiration from around the globe.
Religion
Humans possess the remarkable ability to believe. Various faiths—Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism—dominate the landscape of belief.
> Religion shapes societal norms and individual values.
A person's identity can be deeply intertwined with their religious beliefs.
Sadly, this has led to dehumanization and discrimination against those with differing faiths.
> It’s foolish!
God is a creation of human thought; He does not exist independently.
> Despite our differing beliefs, we are all fundamentally the same.
Occupation
We live in a society defined by specialization. Numerous professions exist, and the nature of work has evolved since the Agricultural Revolution.
Labor has historically involved specific tasks, and over time, certain roles became firmly established.
> Sometimes, a job becomes synonymous with a person’s identity, particularly if they dedicate their lives to it.
Occupation can shape identity and lifestyle, which is why we can appear entirely different based on our jobs.
> Yet, this is also an illusion.
Work does not encapsulate who we are.
Our attire, speech, and mannerisms may be influenced by our professions, but at our core, we remain Homo sapiens.
If an intern and a CEO were stripped of their roles on a deserted island, they’d quickly realize they are both merely human.
> Work is simply a means of survival in a capitalist framework.
Role in the Family
Various terms exist for roles within a family—grandmother, grandfather, mother, father, son, daughter.
In the past, roles were rigidly defined. There was a time when children were expected to obey their parents unquestioningly.
> These familial roles have gradually been shaped by societal norms, religion, and customs.
Ultimately, what exists is a small group of humans.
> Those who possess the desire or capability should embrace roles freely. There’s nothing amiss with a father cooking breakfast or a mother being the primary breadwinner.
Both parents and children are human beings deserving of respect. Thus, interactions should occur on equal terms, rather than the parent issuing commands.
Final Thoughts
While we humans embody various identities, they are all illusions. At our core, we are simply the same.
> This realization is beautiful.
Let’s remember that we are all of the same species; let’s cultivate love, respect, and kindness toward one another.
Break free from identity constraints and pursue your passions.
> I choose to define my identity on my terms, rather than allowing societal expectations to dictate it.
I recognize that I am reborn each day, releasing attachments to my past self. My identity flows and evolves like water.
When we grasp that we are just human, we open ourselves to a more liberated existence.
