Exploring Guilt: A September Writing Challenge for Creatives

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing the Challenge

As summer draws to a close, one might wonder if it will bring about a sense of calm. Let's explore this together…

Paul’s presence in this month's Ruby image serves a purpose that will become clear shortly. Life has been nothing short of chaotic for me lately. Unexpectedly, I find myself entangled in the whirlwind of being an Upper East Side Manhattan socialite.

With approximately 40% of a novel drafted, I’ve also ventured to Alaska and embarked on my first cruise, so enticing that I needed a little bribery to return home. But let's not dwell on the details of that bribe. 😉

I've joined Substack and am still navigating this new venture. My publication, titled "Trauma, Drama, and Pets," is a work in progress. If you’re active on Substack, let’s exchange subscriptions!

Now, let's dive into the prompt for this month!

If you're new to my prompts, welcome to a mental labyrinth designed to challenge your creativity. These prompts may appear straightforward and innocent at first glance, but their true purpose is to push you beyond your usual writing boundaries.

Each month, I present a theme along with writing prompts, but you're not obligated to adhere to them, as confirmed by the very costly attorney I consulted (sorry, Mom!).

What's family for if not for a little chaos?

Everything I do has a purpose, even when it seems otherwise. I encourage you to reflect on the theme in a variety of contexts: psychology, philosophy, criminology, or even a whimsical take on "Rubyology" (which, trust me, you can totally major in — though it won’t lead to a job).

Feel free to explore any genre, and I especially invite you to experiment with styles you’ve never tried before. Participation is encouraged but not enforced.

You can share your creations in "Read or Die!" where these prompts originate, and where the creative community gathers. We have cookies and strong coffee! But again, it’s your choice where to publish your work, whether in our community or elsewhere. Just know that "Read or Die!" is where the vibrant writers congregate, and you know you want to be a part of it!

Each month brings a new theme and writing suggestions, but they remain available indefinitely. You can respond to them whenever you wish, as they’re archived on my main page with links at the end of this post.

Essentially, there are no hard-and-fast rules — I’m not a fan of them. I do ask that you include a link back to this post and tag me in your response, so I can appreciate your creativity. Think of it more as a guideline than a rule; after all, copyrights can be quite the headache! 😂😂😂

Now, let’s address the theme for this month and the significance of Paul’s inclusion in the Ruby image crafted by a talented friend who has a knack for transforming our photos into quirky and eerie representations that reflect my personality.

I embrace my uniqueness, and Paul is supportive of it.

For those who follow my journey, you may know that Paul and I have been contemplating starting a family. We have even chosen names for our future children, but the decision weighs heavily on us. We once experienced the heartache of having a child who was born prematurely and passed away shortly after. The trauma from that experience has left me grappling with guilt, as I often internalize the blame for what happened.

Thus, this month’s theme is…

GUILT.

You’re invited to explore guilt in your own way, using the suggestions below as a starting point. Remember, while you can pivot to parenting as a theme, I encourage you to think creatively and approach it from a fresh perspective. I thrive on provoking thought — it’s a personal hobby!

Happy writing, and farewell to summer!

Have you experienced guilt over something that others deemed was not your fault? Reflect on that moment and how it felt despite others’ reassurances.

In a courtroom, guilt is determined by a jury. Do you think this system is just? Is it logical? Share your thoughts.

Consider the worst mistake you've made in a relationship. Do you feel guilt or justification? This could pertain to any human connection — share your story and discuss your feelings then versus now.

What crimes do you think could be justified under certain circumstances? What would it take for you to render a not guilty verdict for a serious crime like murder?

From a philosophical standpoint, consider this: is guilt inherently tied to responsibility? Share your viewpoint.

Reflect on this quote: “No work or love will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart, just as no valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.” — Alan Watts.

Some individuals thrive in open relationships or as swingers. Do you see that as infidelity? How would you feel if your partner proposed it?

As a parent (or future parent), do you feel guilty about the “normal” lies we tell children, like those about Santa? How did you feel learning the truth?

Do you believe in karma? Do guilty individuals ultimately receive their just desserts? What if they don’t?

Write about one thing you could never do due to the overwhelming guilt it would create. What actions from your partner would lead you to leave them? What could your child do that would lead to disownment?

That’s the essence of it! Remember to take your writing in your own direction, and if you choose one of my prompts, give it the thought it deserves. Enjoy the process — parenting is just one of many themes you can explore without restrictions.

We are indeed considering starting a family, but the fear of loss is ever-present. Many of you may relate to this pain. How did you cope? Your insights could guide me through this difficult decision.

Happy writing, and I look forward to seeing your creations in October!
