Chapter 1: Understanding Your Inner "Authenticity Police"
Are you feeling constrained by your inner "Authenticity Police"? It's important to recognize that you can embrace your individuality while still being deserving of love.
I once worked with an incredible woman who was grappling with the effects of aging on her body. A part of her wished to enhance her appearance, while another part insisted she should fully accept the aging process. I refer to this second part as the "Authenticity Police."
These internal critics often fail to grasp that it's entirely possible to desire changes in your appearance and still be worthy. Perfectionism, even when claimed to be "authentic," offers no real value. The reality is that love does not demand perfection; it simply wishes for you to engage with life in the way that feels right for you.
I used to judge women who had undergone cosmetic procedures, viewing them as lacking authenticity or feeling sorry for their low self-esteem. However, I've come to appreciate that they are simply expressing themselves in the way they prefer—there's no universal benchmark for authenticity.
You have the right to explore your identity in whichever way you choose, even if it diverges from being deemed "perfectly authentic." I truly grasped this concept when my own inner critics told me that wanting to go to the gym or alter my physique was akin to compromising my values.
Then, during a coaching session, one of my mentors suggested, "Perhaps you haven't yet built the inner strength to fully accept your body as it is. Consider how transformative it could be to explore what happens when you prioritize fitness."
Shortly after, I realized that it was entirely possible to work on my appearance and still feel worthy. My self-worth wasn't tethered to my looks, and it felt empowering to strive for fitness. Both can coexist.
When my client acknowledged that her worthiness remained intact, regardless of her choice to undergo enhancements or use filters on social media, she visibly lightened. The burdens imposed by her inner critics were lifted, freeing her from the weight of self-judgment.
You deserve to pursue your desires, even if they align with societal expectations. You have the right to navigate your human experience within the context of the society you inhabit; there’s no need to constantly seek to transcend it.
You are entitled to explore both the sacred and secular aspects of life; they need not conflict.
Confidence and a sense of worthiness naturally emerge when you eliminate the arbitrary conditions you've placed on your self-worth. Striving for "perfect authenticity" is merely one of the many limitations you may have imposed on your value.
