Embracing Support: Why Going Sober Alone is a Challenge

Chapter 1: The DIY Mentality and Sobriety

Many of us, myself included, often adopt a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach in various aspects of life.

This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.

I pride myself on my ability to tackle projects independently. From group assignments in school where I took on all responsibilities due to my lack of trust in others, to renovating homes because I believed I could rectify others' errors, I have always felt more comfortable doing things my way. My husband often joined me in this endeavor, as we believed he could execute tasks more effectively and precisely to my liking. I even paint my nails and cut my own hair, and at one point, I made clothes for my children when they were young.

"My way is the best way," has often been my mindset. I’ve thought to myself, “I don’t need a therapist; I can introspect.” I’ve dismissed the need for professional medical advice, relying instead on my own research. I even believed I could manage my sobriety independently.

However, nine years later, I found myself still struggling with alcohol.

While there are certainly things we can accomplish solo, there are also tasks that require the support of others, a community, or an expert. Achieving sobriety is one of these tasks.

I've heard stories of individuals who managed to quit drinking abruptly on their own—those rare cases we often refer to as "unicorns." Ironically, many of these individuals maintain ties to a sober community, which helps them stay grounded.

If you’ve been attempting to navigate sobriety alone for some time, it’s likely you might need additional assistance. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness; it's a common reality for most people battling addiction. Alcohol, being a highly addictive substance, can be particularly difficult to conquer alone.

Don’t go through this journey solo. It’s considerably more challenging, and having a supportive network that genuinely cares about you can make a world of difference.

As a sober coach, my mission is to assist those struggling with excessive drinking to break free from their harmful relationship with alcohol and explore the next beautiful chapter of their lives.
