Embracing Joy in Social Media: A Guide to Positive Connections

Written on

Chapter 1: The Joy of Unfollowing

If your social media posts fail to bring joy, I'm quick to hit that unfollow button—regardless of whether you're a family member, friend, or influencer.

Curating a joyful social media experience

Inspiration from Marie Kondo, the renowned Japanese decluttering expert, teaches us that items lacking joy should be let go. I’ve embraced this mindset and am extending it to my online interactions. If a person's posts don’t uplift me on Instagram, I’m unfollowing them—no exceptions.

Consider this: how often do you scroll through your feed and feel a sense of heaviness or even mild anxiety? Personally, this occurs frequently, and it’s a sensation I find particularly unpleasant. It typically involves matters beyond my control. Each time I experience this discomfort, I contemplate unfollowing that individual or deleting the app entirely. The only thing that kept me from acting sooner was the need to maintain contact with certain people and to follow inspiring accounts.

This week, I finally took decisive action. I unfollowed every account that triggered negativity in my feed. In their place, I sought out home decor pages (as I plan to revamp my living and dining spaces) and travel photographers. These new follows not only bring joy but also spark my creativity.

Now, when I open Instagram, I’m greeted by stunning landscapes that inspire my ever-growing travel bucket list, or cozy boho-style living rooms that I can envision myself enjoying one day.

The key takeaway is simple: prioritize what brings you happiness. Don’t squander your time on social media if it distracts you or triggers feelings of worry, jealousy, or anger. We should all derive pleasure from our social media experiences, as they are integral to our daily lives—even if we hesitate to acknowledge this reality.
