Managing Time Effectively as a Student and Entrepreneur

Chapter 1: The Importance of Time Management
As a full-time student juggling 21 units alongside running a business, I have experienced the critical role that effective time management plays in ensuring quality output while minimizing distractions, fatigue, and burnout. Over the past three years, I've explored various productivity tools and time management systems, but found little success until I encountered the Pomodoro Technique in 2021.
The Pomodoro Technique is particularly beneficial for those who find it easy to get sidetracked or wish to measure the time spent on specific tasks. One of the major challenges I overcame in balancing my personal, academic, and professional responsibilities was my inclination to scatter my attention.
Being both hyperactive and highly aware, I often flit between tasks, only to realize later that an hour has passed without any meaningful progress. This state of pseudo-productivity creates the illusion of productivity, yet my fragmented focus hampers my ability to complete significant work.
The Pomodoro Technique addresses these distractions by focusing on one task at a time. This approach not only enhances my concentration but also builds anticipation for completing my Pomodoro before moving on to the next task.
Section 1.1: Implementing the Pomodoro Technique
The process is straightforward:
Select a Task
Choose a task that requires your attention, whether it's studying a textbook chapter, completing an assignment, or reviewing code.
Set Your Work Duration
I recommend starting with 25 minutes of focused work, gradually increasing the duration as your attention span improves. After a 25-minute session, take a 5-minute break; for a 45-minute work session, rest for 15 minutes afterward.
Focus on the Task
When your timer goes off, it's important to step away from work. Use this break to recharge—avoid mindless social media scrolling; instead, go for a walk, brew coffee, or reflect on your completed work. Quality output relies on proper rest, so ensure you're revitalized before beginning the next work session.
By consistently completing Pomodoros, you'll cultivate attention endurance, essential for effectively managing your time and reducing feelings of overwhelm. The more adept you become at engaging in focused work followed by restorative breaks, the better you'll perform in all areas of life.
My preferred method is the 45/15 Pomodoro. This setup is brief enough to keep it engaging while allowing enough time to accomplish substantial work. I like to pair my Pomodoro with a great playlist and a cup of coffee.
