Discovering the Flow State: Embrace the Journey to Enjoyment

Chapter 1: The Essence of Being Present

Recently, I came across a video by Owen, a dating coach, which struck a chord with me. My own dating coach had mentioned that this video contained profound insights.

A recurring theme I encounter is the importance of being present, savoring the journey toward a goal, and achieving a flow state. In this essay, I will discuss these themes and share affirmations that can embed essential truths into your subconscious. Additionally, I will explain how to recognize when you are in a flow state, enabling you to achieve and maintain that state.

Let's dive in.

Here are some affirmations that embody the idea of finding joy in the process:

  • "The artist finds more joy in the act of painting than in the finished piece."
  • "Focus on intention while releasing attachment to the outcome."
  • "A person who values the journey more than the destination will always move forward."

In conjunction with these affirmations, I want to recount my experience of obtaining both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).

During a challenging time in my life, I made the decision to transform my future. I aimed to pursue higher education and contribute positively to society. Throughout this journey, I discovered fulfillment in studying, fostering relationships with peers and professors, and engaging in the learning process itself.

However, upon earning my Master's degree, I felt a surprising sense of emptiness. Reflecting on it now, I realize that this feeling arose from the conclusion of my educational journey. Achieving that goal left me with a void; the process of striving was far more gratifying than the outcome. While people may congratulate you on your accomplishments, deep down, you understand that the journey is what truly nurtures your spirit. We are meant to continuously evolve and embrace the achievement process.

Ways to Enter the Flow State:

Recognizing when you are in a flow state is quite straightforward. It occurs when you are fully immersed in an activity, losing track of time as hours seem to fly by in an instant. By reflecting on past experiences, you can pinpoint those moments and learn to replicate them.

Currently, I find myself in a flow state. I am not concerned with time; my sole focus is on conveying this information to you so that you can pursue your aspirations with effective frameworks, avoiding the pitfalls I encountered.

Failing to engage in flow and neglecting to appreciate the process has led me to prioritize superficiality and fleeting pleasures over personal growth. When you allow vanity and pleasure to overshadow the journey, frustration and anger can arise from not achieving results swiftly, which creates a negative mindset. My hope is to steer you away from that path or, at the very least, prevent you from continuing in that direction. An affirmation I cherish is, "A life dedicated to serving others is a truly fulfilling life."

The following is a list of activities that help me enter the flow state:

  • Engaging with a captivating book
  • Exercising (walking and weightlifting)
  • Creating art, such as drawing or painting
  • Producing content that benefits others: videos, articles, audio recordings, etc.
  • Connecting intimately with a partner
  • Diving straight into work
  • Celebrating small victories (gratitude, meditation, going for a walk)

I feel invigorated and in flow after workouts, which is why I prioritize them daily. Each day is extraordinary for me, regardless of whether it’s Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or my birthday; I embrace the joy of each moment.
