Building a Thriving Career in Public Relations: Insights from Lauren Arnold

Written on

Chapter 1: The Dynamic World of Public Relations

Public relations is a demanding field, particularly within agency settings, where quick thinking and adaptability are crucial. A strong work ethic is vital, as professionals often juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. Motivation and diligence are key components for thriving in this fast-paced industry.

Have you ever considered a career in public relations, perhaps inspired by shows like "Flack"? What does it take to excel in this field? This interview series, titled "5 Essentials for a Successful PR Career," features insights from accomplished publicists who share their experiences and wisdom.

One such expert is Lauren Arnold, the Business Director at Talk Shop Media, an integrated communications agency. Lauren oversees a business unit that manages a portfolio of innovative tech companies, supporting some of North America's most rapidly growing startups. She is dedicated to enhancing the visibility of visionary founders and fostering brand awareness for businesses that contribute positively to society.

Thank you for joining us, Lauren! Given your busy schedule, could you share what led you to pursue this career?

I graduated from Western University with a degree in Media, Information, and Technoculture. During my studies, I had the opportunity to undertake internships, many of which were with PR agencies. I found my passion at a small boutique agency, where the high-energy environment and the chance to tell impactful stories captivated me.

What has been one of the most memorable experiences in your role at Talk Shop?

While there have been many highlights, such as coordinating media interviews for Steve Aoki at his last concert before the pandemic or attending CES 2020 in Las Vegas, the most compelling experience has been witnessing how Talk Shop adapted to the challenges posed by COVID-19. The transformation of the PR and media landscape during this time will be a defining chapter in my career, and I am immensely proud of our team's resilience.

Can you recount a humorous mistake from your early days in PR and what you learned from it?

In my first year, I was involved in a live interview with a prominent host from one of Canada's leading business networks. A last-minute change in the spokesperson took me by surprise, and instead of notifying the producer beforehand, I waited until we arrived on-site. The surprise didn't go over well! This taught me the importance of clear and timely communication—never again will I make that oversight.

What exciting projects are you currently working on?

We are thrilled to announce several funding rounds for some of Canada's most promising startups and scaleups. Additionally, we are engaged in national reports that provide valuable insights into entrepreneurship, the future of work, and healthcare—topics that are significant to many right now.

From a business perspective, we are in the midst of planning for our upcoming fiscal year. Last year was marked by significant growth, including the addition of 17 new team members in Toronto, an acquisition, and 14 promotions. We’re eager to set our goals and focus areas for the next year.

As a successful leader, what three traits do you believe have been most crucial to your achievements?

  1. Hustle: The fast-paced nature of PR, especially during the rapid news cycles of COVID-19, demands a consistent hustle. You must continually devise new strategies and approaches under pressure.
  2. Passion and Interest: I genuinely love what I do, which helps make my work feel less like a job. I’ve carved out a niche in technology that I am truly excited about.
  3. Stress Management: Although not a traditional trait, managing stress is vital in PR. A colleague's Twitter bio reminds us that "This is PR, not the ER," emphasizing the importance of finding ways to cope with the industry's pressures.

Let’s shift focus to our main discussion. Can you elaborate on the various forms of public relations?

A recent tweet I saw encapsulated it well: "PR is more than media relations." This highlights the multifaceted nature of PR, which includes earned media, paid media, contributed content, events, and speaking opportunities. From a marketing standpoint, consider PR as an essential top-of-funnel strategy—it's about building brand awareness over time rather than having a switch you can flip on and off.

For a young person interested in a PR career, where should they begin their education? Is a communications degree necessary?

I'm glad I chose to pursue a degree in communications, as it allowed me to transition directly into the PR field. Early exposure to PR through internships is invaluable. My degree taught me about deadlines, effective writing (though academic writing differs from PR writing), and the importance of building relationships. I truly honed my PR skills once I started engaging with clients and pitching media.

You are recognized for your networking skills. What advice can you share for effective networking?

Start building relationships consistently and think about how you can offer value to those you meet. Despite the challenges of networking during the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone is navigating similar circumstances. Engage meaningfully on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn. When reaching out for one-on-one conversations, come prepared with specific questions about their work or campaigns—this approach shows genuine interest.

Lead generation is crucial for any business. What strategies do you use to generate quality leads?

Building a solid reputation for delivering exceptional work is foundational. Your network is vital in PR, especially for enhancing your reputation based on client success. Establishing a referral network and maintaining a respected standing within your industry is key to growing a PR business.

Now, let’s discuss the core of our interview. What are your "5 Essentials for a Successful Career in Public Relations," and why are they important?

  1. Strong Work Ethic: PR is fast-paced, requiring the ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. Dedication and hard work are fundamental to success.
  2. Genuine Passion: You must be deeply interested in your industry—whether it’s technology, healthcare, or consumer goods—to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the demands of the job.
  3. Clear Writing Skills: Writing is a significant part of a PR professional's day. The ability to communicate clearly and succinctly is critical.
  4. Verbal Communication Skills: Effective verbal communication is essential, particularly in client-facing roles, to build and maintain relationships.
  5. Storytelling Ability: Storytelling is at the heart of PR. We are tasked with conveying the narratives of the founders we represent and the companies we support, connecting them to broader media stories.

If you could inspire a movement to benefit many people, what would it be?

While not a traditional movement, I would promote kindness. In today's world, it’s crucial to remember that everyone faces their own challenges. If we could all approach our interactions with kindness, it would foster a more compassionate society.

Thank you for sharing your insights, Lauren! This conversation has been incredibly enlightening!
