Are You Taking Real Steps Toward Your Goals?

Understanding the Concept of Motion vs. Action

The book Atomic Habits by James Clear has prompted me to reflect on the importance of taking genuine action toward my aspirations.

For those unfamiliar with it, Atomic Habits delves into how to enhance daily routines. Clear suggests that aiming to improve just 1% each day can lead to significant, sustainable change over time. While the ideas may seem straightforward, several points in the book have deeply resonated with me. One particular insight that stood out was:

"Motion doesn’t lead to results.

‘Motion allows us to feel like we’re making progress without running the risk of failure.’

We often sidestep situations that might lead to failure, remaining in a state of motion instead."

This quote emphasizes that while we may feel productive through planning and strategizing, true progress requires action that yields tangible outcomes.

For instance, if your goal is to write more articles, blocking time on your schedule is merely a motion. The real action lies in actually writing those articles. This realization has led me to question whether I am genuinely taking steps toward my goals.

While I am making some progress—like you reading this—it's evident that small achievements aren't enough to fulfill my broader aspirations, such as achieving financial abundance.

I appreciate every bit of progress, and I express gratitude for what I have.

But I can’t help but wonder about those other ideas I’ve shelved, waiting for the right moment to act, only to realize they’ve vanished from my focus.

In the past, I ran a videography business called Be in Motion, which ultimately failed due to inaction. It’s all too easy to remain ‘in motion’ without progressing.

When discussing someone’s nature, a friend once remarked, “she is a doer, you know?” This comment made me reflect on my own identity. Am I a dreamer? A procrastinator? Someone stagnant? I know my friend meant no harm, but it sparked a desire in me to become more proactive and less hesitant.

James Clear offers valuable advice: “You don’t need to plan every aspect of a new habit. You just need to practice it.” It's time to hit the Action Gym and start taking those essential steps.

How to Take Action Toward Your Goals

  1. Define Your End Goal.

What exactly am I aiming for? Personally, I aspire to earn a living through my creative passions. However, this goal feels vague. It’s crucial to specify what constitutes a "living." How much do I need monthly, weekly, or daily? Clarity allows me to focus on actionable tasks.

  2. Be Honest with Yourself.

What habits are you currently nurturing? I wanted to cultivate a money-making habit, yet I found myself engaging in activities that resulted in motion rather than action. I have plans for various income streams—selling eBooks, creating courses, and establishing a membership site. But have I taken significant steps toward any of these? I've written an eBook on self-care for educators, but I've hardly promoted it.

In this case, my habits got tangled. While the practice of writing was beneficial, it didn’t directly contribute to my financial objectives. I lost momentum in the essential habit of generating income.

  1. Establish the Habit of Action.

For my next venture, I am refining my approach: I will pre-sell my upcoming book. This strategy not only builds anticipation but also propels me toward my goal of earning a sustainable income from my creative work.

That’s what real action looks like.

Conclusion

James Clear’s insights on forming lasting habits continue to inspire me. Each time I revisit his book, I gain new perspectives that help me align my actions with my life’s aspirations.

You can do the same! Ask yourself: What is the outcome I desire? Evaluate what you are genuinely doing and then take that crucial step forward. You’ve got this!
